Areas of Focus |
Why you should use this drill |
|
Wide Receiver Start Drill |
Teaching the Wide
Receivers to get off the line of scrimmage. |
- Getting off the line is
VERY important, whether its a pass play or a
run play requiring blocking from the WR.
- Teaching the wide receiver how to get off
the line properly will give your offense an
advantage in the passing game.
- When your WR comes off the line the same
way EVERY play, the defense will be guessing
if its a pass or run.
|
|
WR Stance Drill |
Teach the WR how
to get in the proper 2-point wide receiver
stance. |
- Key to getting of the line
quickly is starting off in the right stance.
- Teaching and enforcing the use of the
right stance will instill some discipline into
your players, always a good thing.
- When your WR uses the proper stance every
play the defense cannot tell between pass or
run.
|
|
Wide Receiver Curl Drill |
Teach your wide
receivers to perfect the curl route. |
- The curl route is the
HARDEST for a cornerback to defend 1-on-1 when
run properly.
- Wouldn't you like to be able to constantly
gain 8-10 yards every time you need to pass.
- Running a good curl route develops the
fundamentals of running proper pass routes.
|
|
WR Cut Drill |
Teach your wide
receivers to make cuts at the optimal speed. |
- The faster the wide
receiver can make accurate cuts when running
pass routes, the more open receivers will be.
- Improves the overall offensive pass
efficiency.
- Keeps the defense secondary following the
receiver, not jumping the route.
|
|
Wide Receiver Short Route
Drill |
Coach your wide
receivers to perfect the common short routes,
the stop, curl, out and in route. |
- The basic short routes are
the bread-n-butter of an effective passing
game.
- If your wide receiver cannot run the short
routes, more advanced routes will fail.
- Have the ability to pass for short first
downs instead of running, keeps the defense
guessing.
|
|
WR
Pass Line Drill |
Teach your Wide
receivers to make the catch with hands extended.
Catching the ball at the highest point. |
- The player that extends his
arms and makes the catch at the highest point,
normally makes the catch.
- Reduce interceptions caused
by the failure of the WR to fight for the
ball.
- Teach your wide receivers
to be aggressive, fight for every catch.
|
|
Wide Receiver Pass Gauntlet Drill |
Teach your WR to
catch the ball from different angles on the
field. |
- During game day their will
be a lot of confusion in a WRs vision, being
able to catch from any angle gives your QB a
bigger margin of error.
- Improve your passing game by having wide
receivers ready to make a catch anywhere on
the field.
- Force the defense to cover your wide
receivers everywhere on the field, not just in
certain areas.
|
|
WR
Mirror Blocking Drill |
Teach the wide
Receiver to make proper downfield blocks for the
running game. |
- Often the difference
between a 10-15 yard running play and a long
touchdown is the lack of downfield blocking by
a WR.
- Teach your wide receivers to take pride in
downfield blocking as well as the pass game.
- Wide receivers can lead to more scores by
blocking than by catching passes.
- Keeps the defensive secondary honest, they
always have to respect the WR.
|
|
Wide Receiver Medium Route Drill |
Teach the wide
receivers to properly run the medium pass
routes. |
- Being able to run medium
pass routes (10-12 yards) will help stretch
the defense and open the running game.
- This will improve overall offensive
success.
- Improve the variety of pass options your
team has.
|
|
Wide Receiver Distraction Drill |
Coach your wide
receivers to be able to make the catch will
covered or distracted. |
- During practice or
scrimmages the game conditions are controlled,
much different than game day.
- Teach a WR how to handle the on field
distractions a WR faces.
- Improve your wide receivers focus, leading
to more catches, more points.
